In May and June of 2011, I travelled to Belize, Central America for a tropical biology field school. My experiences there, particularly under the tutelage of one Ed Boles, led me to feel rather strongly about the value and wonder of the natural and biodiverse sub-tropical ecosystems in that area.

In particular, I was very drawn to the river systems of Belize -- not just because I could literally become immersed in that environment -- but in regards to protecting the incredible variety of life they support. Many Central American countries have very unstable governments that often don't prioritize the environment (or even give it too much thought at all) - and when it comes to building roads or dams, it is only infrastructure and economics they are thinking of.

The Macal River is one such important Belizean waterway that has been heavily dammed, stealing sediment and good things from the river water, leaving what Ed Boles called 'hungry waters' that cannot support life. Considering these water bodies house some of the most astonishing diversity of life in the known world, this becomes a real concern for ecologists like Boles who love and fight to protect these habitats.

When you hear this 'melody', think of the beauty this world contains!
